[flag.day]

i woke up at 5:30am on sat morning to be at central by 7:30am to sell flags for
St. Barnabas Society and Home, an organization that serves the poor and the homeless in Hong Kong by providing them with amenities such as hot showers, food, and shelter. in a city where the dichotomy between the haves and the have-nots is so wide that people can be quite apathetic sometimes.

this was my first time selling flags in HK so i was excited about the new experience. for my non-HKers, selling flags (or stickers to be exact) is a way to raise money for registered charities and non-profit organizations in HK. it usually takes place on Sat mornings and volunteers go around the city with a money bag in hand and ask for donations from people on the street. once people have donated, they get a sticker in return to show their generosity.

people are usually fairly nice about these kinds of things cuz many HK people are already used to flag days. you have people who approach you voluntarily for a sticker or when asked to donate, they are all willing to put in some money into the money bag. and then you have these people who make a bee-line out of your way to avoid you completly. at first it was hard to not take it personally but in the end, you realize that the problem isn't really you.

people usually put in a few dollars but i had a few people who put in $20 and even $100 into my money bag!! i find the best people to approach are families and business men and also being polite and a smile doesn't hurt either!

[virtual.ninja]

i secretly videotaped my cousin playing with his new toy yesterday. it's a 'virtual reality' game where you 'fight' these 'ninjas'. i still can't believe he spent all his lai see money on it. and apparently, the game has other versions like 'virtual baseball' and 'virtual car racing'. whatever happened to good old fighting with your friends and siblings and REAL baseball OUTSIDE??!

i apologize for the amature shot and shakiness of the video because i was trying so hard not to laugh and blow my cover. i couldn't help it cuz i thought it was the funniest thing in the world! he was really into the game.

ahh...i am such an awesome cousin.

well, at least he's getting his excersize.
